Biography of Dr. John D. Johnson, CISSP

John is currently a staff member working for John Deere in Moline, Illinois. He is a key member of a small team of computer security professionals responsible for distributed and network computer across more than 130 John Deere business units in 160 countries worldwide. John has been responsible for architecting solutions that have been critical to maintaining global network security at John Deere, including strong authentication, antivirus, network and application vulnerability management and penetration testing. John provides training on these topics to staff members both at home and abroad each year. Before moving to the Quad Cities in 1999, John was network security manager for the Theoretical Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory.

John is a frequent lecturer and member of peer groups, industry panels and advisory councils. John was a featured panelist at Black Hat in 2008 and 2009, and he gave the keynote for SC Magazine Symposium in January 2010. John maintains a Certified Information Security Systems Professional (CISSP) credential and has developed courses on information assurance, computer security and computer ethics for both online and local universities. He served on the organizing committee for the RSA Conference 2008, the world's largest information security conference.

John received his B.S. from Michigan Technological University, his M.S. from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in nuclear physics from the University of Texas at Austin. He remains active in developing and teaching science and astronomy courses as an adjunct professor at St. Ambrose University and Scott Community College. He is active with area organizations in promoting science and engineering to students and the general public. John has been an author on 44 scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for scientific conferences.

John is active in several professional science and engineering organizations, including: IEEE, American Astronomical Society, American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and FBI Infragard. John has been an advanced mastery coach at John Deere for several years. John was inducted as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in 2007, and was awarded QCESC Senior Scientist of the Year for 2008.

John has served as Member-at-Large, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Chair and Chair of the Iowa-Illinois Section of IEEE. He is founder and chair of the IEEE Iowa-Illinois Computer Society chapter and IEEE Region 4 Education Chair. John is President-Elect for the Quad Cities Engineering & Science Council and is currently Illinois FBI Infragard Treasurer. John enjoys blogging about security, science and skepticism on his website and lives in Bettendorf, Iowa.
