John worked as a research assistant, while attending The University of Texas at Austin. John worked on nuclear science experiments at TRIUMF and LAMPF. John completed his research dissertation on Pion Double-Charge-Exchange at LAMPF in 1992.

John stayed on as a postdoctoral fellow at Los Alamos, where he managed projects developing Long Range Alpha Detectors, used for radioactive waste remediation and weapons inspections. He lead efforts to develop a hand-held swipe monitor for the military and a liquid alpha detector at the radioactive liquid waste processing facility at LANL.
