American Mating Rituals

Hey there! I am back from Brian’s wedding. I actually missed the ceremony, but I made the reception. It’s kind of funny, I was in my boxers, trying to put a web page up for a client and trying to not miss the wedding, when two nice young Mormon girls came to the door. Well, I walked up in boxers, not knowing who to expect, but knowing that I have very few people who would visit on a Sunday. I knew enough to peek out from behind the door, hiding my shame, which was good, because they might have told God that I was wearing old ratty boxers. I told them that someone had come to the door earlier, and talked to us about Jesus. This was true. A new church was sending out parishioners to recruit for the Baptist Gospel Church, and they spoke with Jarrett in the morning. I held up their flyer as proof we had already had a conversation about God and Jesus, and excused myself.

Earlier in the day, as we were running errands and heading to IHOP for breakfast (isn’t that nice!) Jarrett told me the story of the man and his daughter, who came to the door looking for people without a church. I don’t think it is just his desire for a car, but in general he has been very nice and he speaks to me regularly, and we even go out to eat. We ate at Taco Bell earlier in the week, and today at IHOP. (I’m talking about Jarrett, not the man from the church. Although I am sure he was nice.)

So, a web page, a new toilet seat, and some pancakes covered in blueberry syrup later, it brings me to the story of the wedding reception. Basically, it was good. I was dressed smartly in a suit, and I found my way through the rainy streets of Rock Island to the Four Points Sheraton. My co-workers were mostly there, and a lot of people I didn’t know. There must have been a couple hundred people in that room. I would have to marry a woman with lots of relatives, because I could fill three tables at best, if I were the groom. There was a meal (prime rib) and free beer. A tea totaling co-worker told me that it was an open bar, and he was wrong. I ordered my obligatory Long Island Iced Tea, and was charged five dollars. Because I had no cash, the nice lady gave it to me for free. I later took two bucks from a friend and tipped her. Is that ethical?

Well, liquor aside, the festivities were lovely, and the couple as cute as bugs in a rug. I stayed and watched other people dance for a while, and then made my exit, and returned home in the rain. Thus is my solitary life. If you consider that most weekends I only leave the house to buy groceries, this was a pretty eventful Saturday! And, there’s a whole day left to the weekend! (If it rains again, I won’t have to mow. Yippee!) =j=
