There’s a peroid after you admit Summer is over that I like to call Septober. It’s a time when you put your white pants away for the year and enjoy the changing colors, pumpkins and leaf piles and cool temperatures. Frankly, we’ve had some really cold nights this past month, but once the Big Rain ended yesterday, the temperatures got up above 70F and winds died down. Today looks like it will be even nicer than yesterday.
Septober is a relief from the heat of the late Summer. Things are slowing down, going into hibernation for Winter. My trees haven’t dropped all their leaves yet, and unless it snows, I expect a few more weeks of mowing the yard. For the most part, bugs have given way to spiders, and it’s nice to wear sweaters and go to local football games. Plus, you really have to enjoy sitting in front of the fireplace with the dogs reading a book.
This may be the last beautiful Septober day for the year, and I’ll enjoy it as best I can. It’s warm enough to open the windows during the day and air out the house as I clean and bake that apple pie. I know that Octember is just around the corner, with freezing cold and frost and lifeless trees and rain and fog. If the autumnal tranquility of Septober can be compared to your golden years, then Octember is that period between Fall and Winter when everything is gloomy and dark and cold – a season that is not alive or dead, but waiting for something to come. Sometimes Octember stretches on when Winter is shy. But, as I look across my calm, green, peaceful backyard and listen to the chirping of birds, I realize that I’ve procrastinated enough and I must finish my yardwork and close the pool in the next week. If I’m lucky, we’ll get another couple weeks of Septober – but, I’m no weatherman. I can sense the winds of change are upon us, but I still hold out hope for a brighter tomorrow. =j=
