It’s just another morning for me. A bit colder and grayer than yesterday. I fear winter is coming to stay this time. I worry about the gas prices going up again, and I’m upset about my crappy Microsoft operating system, and Internet Explorer resetting all my bookmarks. But, as far as the political world, I am not too worried. As I predicted, the sun did come up this morning and the world continues to revolve regardless of what us humans do. (Just like my Windows PC will do just what I expect: take 30 minutes to fully start up in the morning!)
I am happy to see that so many people who felt left out of the political process last night felt included for a change. We don’t have deep political divides in this country, but we have fallen into the trap of a two-party system, and we too often seek to pigeon-hole one another, to our detriment. The political system works as it was designed to, and our democratic process is still the envy of the world. (Although, I’m sure we can improve it!)
While we should all pat one another on the back for participating in the election process, and for helping us transition to a “post-racial” country, we still have a long way to go. In several states, people have remained preoccupied with regulating the behavior of others and judging their lifestyle. I don’t think it is the government’s business to define what marriage is. In fact, I think the government should have a more limited role, but what can I say, the majority of Americans disagree with me on that. It looks like we will continue to have more government meddling in our lives over the coming years. I hope in four years, we progress towards a more secular, limited government, but I’m not sure… sometimes the pendulum needs to swing back and forth before settling down.
I have no concerns over my well-being. I am gainfully and securely employed at a great company. It amazes me that people really have some of the attitudes they do about the economy though. People really don’t get it, that if you tax the people and companies that have money, they will reinvest less in the economy and it will hurt our GDP, and raise our unemployment levels. I thought it was obvious by looking at Europe, but people only hear what they want to hear. Personality trumps policy. Granted, the policies of Obama and McCain weren’t radically different, but they were different enough, and the people who voted for Obama are more likely to also be the ones to lose their jobs when his recovery takes longer than McCain’s would have. Still, people will blame who their politicians tell them to blame, and people will probably blame Bush, long after he is out of office. But, there will be a lot of good that will come out of an Obama presidency, I am sure. He is a good role model and a decent person, and he will run things ethically. He is being given an opportunity, and I am sure he will make the most out of it.
I had one phone call this morning, but otherwise, today has so far been a write-off. Maybe I can wrap up some lose ends this afternoon before I go home to drink. Actually, I should try to finish up cleaning my yard and get the pool closed before the 70-degree days become frigid. And then drink.
