Brian Cox on the news speaking on the LHC and the role of big science. He addresses the question many people ask, “Why not spend that money on more immediate social problems?” Like Hawking said in my earlier post, we spend less than a tenth of a percent of the world’s GDP on basic scientific research and space exploration and given the many unforeseen benefits to humanity that come out of these endeavors, it is the best spent investment we can make in our future. We have to look at the long future ahead, and not just at today’s immediate problems. I’m confident that future generations will be glad we chose to pursue projects like the LHC.
